Serving in the Church

man serving in the churchOne of the greatest blessings of the gospel of Jesus Christ is the opportunity to serve others. Each member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is given the opportunity to serve within their local congregation by receiving an assignment referred to as a “calling.”

Callings can be any number of assignments. For example, the congregation’s bishop (somewhat like a pastor) is given the calling to lead the congregation. He does so without pay. Members may be given callings to teach Sunday School. Others may serve as youth leaders or to teach children. There are many callings and responsibilities.

All callings are voluntary and unpaid. In this way, a congregation can work together as one big family, serving each other out of the goodness of their hearts. It is very rewarding.
