“…But we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.”
~ Romans 5:11
The Atonement of Jesus Christ is central to God’s plan of salvation for his children. The Atonement refers to Jesus Christ’s sufferings for all of Mankind that makes salvation possible. Some people refer to this as the passion of Jesus Christ.
The most poignant and memorable event of Christ’s Atonement was the crucifixion, but also includes the less recognized, but none less important, sufferings in the Garden of Gethsemane. In these instances, Jesus suffered for the sins of everyone who has, does, or will live upon the Earth.
Jesus did this because he loves us and wants us to return to live with him and our Father in Heaven. There is a scripture in The Book of Mormon that helps illustrate Christ’s love for us when he suffered. An ancient prophet named Moroni was writing when he wrote:
“…I remember that thou has said that thou has loved the world, even unto the laying down of thy life for the world, that thou mightest take it again to prepare a place for the children of men. And now I know that this love which thou hast had for the children of men is charity…”
~ Ether 12:33-34, Book of Mormon
Not only that, but the Atonement of Jesus Christ also covers all of our pains, weaknesses, sadness, and more. Another scripture from The Book of Mormon reads:
“And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind.”
~ Alma 7:11, Book of Mormon
The Atonement can be a difficult thing to comprehend. Still, I know that Jesus Christ loves all of us, that he is real, and that his atonement is real. If ever you have sorrows or griefs or trials, you can turn to Jesus. If ever you sin or make mistakes, Jesus can heal you. It is all because of his love toward us when he suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane and on the Cross in Calvary.
